LOS ANGELES — Now we’re ready to believe in Creed.
When it was announced in 2013 that MGM and Warner Bros. were training up a Rocky spin-off with Fruitvale Station director Ryan Coogler and star Michael B. Jordan in the title role, we have to admit we were scratching our heads. Was another trip into the Rocky ring, which seemed out of gas after a wildly uneven six films, really the best move for one of Hollywood’s brightest up-and-coming director/actor duos?
Then along came this trailer, which first played at Cinemacon and was released Tuesday. No joke: This thing looks like it has a fighting chance at greatness.
Jordan plays the son of Apollo Creed, the charismatic (and undefeated) world heavyweight champion played by Carl Weathers in Rocky. If you’ll recall, the elder Creed was killed in the ring by Russian boxer Ivan Drago at the beginning of Rocky IV, with Rocky throwing in the towel just a moment too late.
Now Creed’s son is following in his dad’s footsteps, and Rocky (Sylvester Stallone, looking more like the Rocky Rocky than any of the other Rockys) is going to train him.
With a script co-written by Coogler and Aaron Covington and Coogler at the helm, we should’ve never doubted this project. Granted, this is only a trailer — but it has intensity and panache, Jordan looks every bit like the living legacy of the dazzling Apollo Creed. If Rocky was ever going to have one more shot at returning to the glory of the 1976 original, this might be it.
Creed is scheduled to go as many rounds as necessary when it opens November 25 — smack in the middle of awards season. Ahem.
