Little Mason has a hole in his heart and an abnormal brain, but this beautiful image is giving his parents some solace.
Brittani and Ian McIntire, of Kansas, are expecting twins, but after a recent doctor’s visit, their joy quickly turned to heartbreak.
They learned that one of their unborn children, Mason, has “a hole in his heart and an abnormal brain.” That has resulted in him not growing properly. “He’s only weighing nine ounces and his sister is over two pounds,” Brittani told a local news station.
After each visit, the couple continued to learn more dreadful news about Mason’s condition. “His only chance of survival would be heart surgery but they wouldn’t do heart surgery because of his brain,” the mother added.
But despite the sad days ahead, the parents were given a glimpse of something beautiful during their latest sonogram: The grainy image showed Mason’s tiny hand grabbing the hand of his sister, Madilyn. “[The nurse] said there’s his hand and there’s her hand and it looks like they’re holding hands,” says Brittani.
While the thought of never getting to know Mason pains Brittani, the image left her somewhat at ease, realizing that Mason’s sister was already protecting him.
It’s just nice with everything going on… I know I’m holding him, I’m carrying him but I just want to be there for him. She’s the only one who can actually be there and is holding onto him… so it’s comforting to know that if he does pass, he won’t be alone.
