Meccano is known for its model toys that are put together using bolts and metal slabs. But model cranes aren’t going to cut it in 2015, so the company is focusing on two new Meccanoids — “personal robot friends” you build using the latest Meccano pieces.
The bigger Meccanoid, the G15 KS, is 4 feet tall and has two motors — and more importantly, it can mimic your movements and voice.
Users can connect their smartphone to the robot; it mimics your movements in real time and connects using Bluetooth. Meccano uses LIM — a programming language for “Learned Intelligent Movement.”
Although this isn’t quite cutting-edge artificial intelligence, Meccanoids are still fun to play with. Users can also control the robots with an app, which includes button commands, and can act as a handheld robot controller.
This all might sound a bit complicated for kids, but company representatives insist it is actually quite simple. The only assembly tools needed are the included wrench and screwdriver.
It doesn’t stop at the 4-feet-tall Meccanoid. You can build all sorts of strange forms for the robot, like a T. Rex or tank. And for people a little too intimidated by the height, there is a smaller and cheaper version that comes with most of the features — including those big WALL-E-like eyes — but is considerably smaller.
The robots are designed for kids 10 and up. The bigger model retails for $399, and the smaller is $179. Both hit stores in Fall 2015. Read more…
